Dr Buddy Ratner is a Fellow of the American Academy of Engineering and Joint Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering, University of Washington. A biomaterials and artificial kidney expert, he’s the founder of the Dialysis Innovation Center.
Dr Ratner develops new surface biomaterials used in medical devices and implants. For example, he engineered a radio frequency plasma deposit that can form a thin film on the surface of existing medical devices and can be used to precisely immobilize key signal molecules. He has synthesized new polymers with biological stability, biodegradability and porosity. Dr Ratner also manufactures and researches new surfaces and materials in contact with proteins, blood, living cells and tissues (in vivo and in vitro).
